Minister for Forests and Ecology Satish Jarkiholi inaugurated works for the construction of a tiger safari at the Kittur Rani Chennamma mini-zoo at Bhutaramanahatti near Belagavi on Sunday.

Mr. Jarkiholi said the mini-zoo had immense potential for development and expansion.

Masterplan

“The State government will spend around Rs. 50 crore to develop a tiger safari and other activities at the zoo,” he said. A masterplan has been laid out for the process, he said.

He laid the foundation stone for construction of a compound wall around the zoo enclosure.

Mr. Jarkiholi said necessary permissions had been taken for establishing a tiger safari.

“It will utilise Rs. 2 crore of the Belagavi City Corporation’s Rs. 100 crore special funds and it will be completed in two-three years,” he said. “The zoo is located near the national highway and has huge tourism potential. Drinking water for the animals in the zoo and the safari will be drawn from the nearby Markandeya river,” said Mr. Jarkiholi.

The safari will come up on a total area of 34 hectares. Of this, the tiger enclosure will be on 14 hectares and the rest will be used for the safari tours. Initially, the safari will start with two tigers.

Chief Conservator of Forest P B Karunakar said the 1.85-km compound wall will be 8 feet high. “All the facilities will be as per the specifications of the New Delhi based Central Zoo Authority,” he added.
