The Bharat Bandh called by various organisations was near-complete in Belagavi on Tuesday.

NWKRTC buses did not leave the central bus stand since daybreak. Autorickshaws did not operate as unions joined the strike.

However, commuters had no problem going from place to place as protesters did not stop private vehicles.

Almost all private shops remained closed. Another reason why almost all shops remained closed was that Tuesday is a market holiday in Belagavi city.

There were no reports of any violent incidents anywhere. Later, various organisations and trade unions took out a protest rally at Rani Channamma Circle.

Members walked from the Ambedkar Park to the Deputy Commissioner’s office.

They shouted slogans against what they called anti-working class policies of the Union government.

They said that the government had ignored their demand for regularisation of services, security of tenure, employee welfare measures and post retirement benefits.

They demanded a return to the old pension scheme, growth with a focus on job creation. They also spoke against the alleged a failure of the Union government to control prices of essential commodities.

Gaibu Jaine Khan, Vijayalakshmi Bai, Satish Nesari, Basavaraj Patil and others were present.
