Kusti Habba begins in Belagavi

The first Karnataka Kusti Habba was inaugurated by Olympian wrestler M R Patil at the district stadium here on Thursday. The four-day tournament is being jointly organized by the state government and Indian Style Wrestling Federation.

The district administration had expected the participation of around 750 wrestlers from various parts of the state, but the number crossed 900 on Thursday itself. Registration will be open till Friday noon. 

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, zilla panchayat president Asha Aihole said she wanted to become a wrestler, but girls were not allowed much freedom in career options in her conservative family.  

City police commissioner DC Rajappa, recalled the patronage of kings to Indian style of wrestling. “This sport had great respect in the Vijayanagar kingdom. The rulers of Mysuru also nourished wrestling and it is an attraction during Mysuru Dasara,” he said. 

Deputy commissioner S B Bommanhalli and IGP (Northern Range) HS Revanna also spoke.
