Rajyotsava was celebrated with joy across Belagavi district on Thursday. A colourful procession was taken out around the city in which folk artistes performed.

The district administration arranged for a helicopter that showered flower petals on the statue of Kittur Chennamma. The 60-year-old statue in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office has been repainted in bronze colour. The police diverted traffic away from the Chennamma Circle to allow the procession to pass through.

A group of youth danced to the tune of new Rajyotsava songs using high decibel speakers.

Hukkeri Mutt organised a mass lunch for around 30,000 people at the Sardar School Grounds. The meal included Huggi, Holige and other dishes. Sri Chandrashekar Swami of Hukkeri Mutt urged the residents of the city to celebrate Rajyotsava with harmony. “In the coming years, we should include speakers of all languages, including Marathi, in celebrating the unification of the State,” he said.

District in-charge Minister Ramesh Jarkiholi inaugurated the celebrations at the CPED Grounds.

He unfurled the national flag and spoke about the contribution of Kannada activists for unification of the State. Regional Commissioner P.A. Meghannanavar, Deputy Commissioner S.B. Bommanahalli, Police Commissioner D.C. Rajappa and others were present. Basappa Chikkaladinni participated in a Rudrabhisheka organised as part of the celebrations.

Some miscreants tied a black flag to a government Kannada school in Kondaskoppa village. After some villagers informed the police, it was taken down.
