The District Electoral Office organised a demonstration of the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) to be used in the Assembly polls, in Belagavi on Monday.

Deputy Commissioner and District Electoral Officer S. Ziyaullah showed the use of the machine and how they were connected to the ballot unit and control units. Engineers from Bharat Electronics Ltd. have checked and rechecked these machines and have told us there is no chance of error in them, he said.

He urged representatives of political parties to encourage people to vote without hesitation. Each vote will be printed and the voter will be able to see it for seven seconds before it gets cut and drops to a box below, he said.

Elaborating on the process, he said voters should get their finger inked after confirming name on the voter list, and come to the polling station. They can then confirm the green light on the ballot unit and push the blue button against the name of the candidate of their choice. Then, they can view the VVPAT screen for the voting slip for seven seconds before it gets cut and falls into a box below. The paper slip contains the serial number, name and symbol of the candidate that they have chosen. If the voter feels that the choice and the printed slip are different, they can complain to the polling official. After a written complaint, the polling officer can take a test vote and check the machine. If the voter is right, they are given another chance to vote.

The paper slips collected in the VVPAT of each booth will be counted separately during counting of votes, the officer said.

VVPAT units will be used in all the 4414 polling booths in the district.

A special drive to enrol new and transferred voters will be held in each booth across the district on April 8. Aspiring voters who have not been able to enrol will be allowed to submit an application and relevant documents to the booth-level officers on that day. Bulk applications will not be accepted, he said.
