Celebratory firing at the Rangeshwar Temple claimed a life at Dhavaleshwar village in Belagavi district on Wednesday.

Nijaguni Maharudrappa Angadi, 47, died on the spot when Mahadevappa Bhimappa Nadagouda fired five rounds during the annual car festival.

The mortal remains were sent to Gokak hospital for investigation. A case of negligence has been registered along with charges under the Arms Act and culpable homicide in Kulgod police station.

Sudheer Kumar Reddy, SP, said that following a Supreme Court judgment the Union government had issued an order that even guns with licence could not be used for celebratory firing and this would violate provisions of the Arms Act.
