Belgaum | Day Light Robbery | Rs 12 Lakh robbed from Bank of Maharastra, Kirloskar Road.

In an attention diversion case, a six-member gang made away with `12 lakh from the Bank of Maharashtra, Kirloskar Road branch in Belagavi on Thursday morning. The incident came to light two hours after the theft.

According to sources, the gang entered the bank premises at about 10.30 am. One of them went to the cash counter on the pretext of withdrawing cash.The other gang members were engaged in distracting the bank staff. Before anyone could notice, the accused at the cash counter entered the cabin and stole the cash from the drawer. Later all the six men disappeared. It took a while for the cashier to realise money was stolen before police could be informed.

According to police sources, the bank was closed for renovation and reopened just a week ago. Police are suspecting labourers who were part of construction work as they were all familiar with the new furniture and way to lock and unlock them. It is suspected that one of the labourers may have tutored the thief thoroughly about the bank. The thief managed to enter the cabin and take the cash without anyone noticing him, sources said. 

Police sources said the culprits didn’t appear to be locals. Police also suspect the gang was well-armed and had an alarm been raised, it may have led to violent consequences. Bazar police are looking at video footage.
