Members of the city corporation of Belagavi raised the issue of government utilities and private contractors digging up city roads, to lay cables and wires, and failing to repair the roads later.

At a meeting on Tuesday, the members complained that utilities like HESCOM and some private companies had been digging up roads across the city, without bothering to repair them later. This is causing accidents, they said.

Members Kiran Sainayak and Dinesh Nasipudi demanded that the engineers and contractors, who were doing this, be disciplined.

MLA Firoze Sait demanded that the commissioner Shashidhar Kurer collect restoration fees from agencies who were involved in such acts.

Mr. Kurer responded that he was not satisfied with the work of digging roads by some agencies. Some agencies have done inappropriate restoration, he said.

He said that high tension cables were being laid in around 980 kilometres across the city at a cost of around Rs. 400 crore. He agreed to the suggestion that restoration fees be collected from violators.

Mayor Sanjot Bandekar and others were present.
